Original
1930s Poetry Collection From San Diego Poet Rachel Harris Campbell
Certain
Poems, by Rachel Harris Campbell (1970), typewritten manuscript, 32pp.
About
the poet: Rachel Harris Campbell was a poet and published author in the
1930s in San Diego. Her book was The Potters Field (Boston: Walter H. Baker
Co. 1939).
This collection of her poetry she selected and typed up in 1970
for the birthday of a friend is likely the only extant copy, although much of
her work is in the Special Collections/Archives at the San Diego State University
Library, and many of the poems were previously published in magazines and anthologies.
About
the prior owner: Sue Wolfer Earnest, better known as Dr. Sue to the many
that admire her, was born Sept. 19, 1907; the same year John Wayne, Katharine
Hepburn and Rachel Carson were born. Graduating in 1928 from what was then called
San Diego State College, she married classmate Lester Earnest that same year.
At the time, the world was in awe of Amelia Earhart's becoming the first woman
to successfully pilot an aircraft across the Atlantic Ocean. What's more, as the
low rumblings of women's rights were beginning to stir, Sue's own journey as a
female academic trailblazer was about to take flight.
A master's from San
Diego State in 1938; a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California in 1947;
then teaching and serving as an administrator in San Diego City schools. Sue's
accomplishments were all the more remarkable in an era where Rosie the Riveter
was urging women to work in the munitions industry. Years later, the end of WWII
meant a return to hearth and home for many women. But for Sue, it meant returning
to her alma mater, this time as a member of the San Diego State faculty.
A
professor of speech arts, Sue witnessed the evolution of that program into the
Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology at the newly named San Diego State
University, where she taught for 26 years, 18 of which she served as chair. Dr.
Earnest died in November 2007 at the age of 100.
