Here is a hard-to-find lantern made by the Handlan-Buck Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Mo. This is their “Handlan” model and is marked on the dome top along with patent dates in a circle. The last patent date is September 24, 1889. This lantern is marked St L&SWRR, for the Saint Louis & Southwestern Railroad, better known as the Cotton Belt Route. The lantern has flat verticals with double round horizontal wire guards and a twist-off base. The brass burner knob is marked E. Miller. The wick is missing (an easy replacement if desired). There is an even layer of mild pitting on the top, but no holes or surface rust. The base has no holes or rust. The globe is clear, unmarked, and has no cracks or breaks. This is a difficult-to-find lantern model and is in very good condition. If you have a marked Cotton Belt logo or StLSWRR globe, this would be the perfect frame for it and would enhance its value considerably. This is a great find for the Cotton Belt collector or general railroad lantern collector. Buyer pays shipping. Thanks for looking! |
