A Rare 1907 Volume of the Royal Anthropological Institute

The Royal Anthropological of Great Britain and Ireland:

The Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland (RAI) is the world's oldest anthropological organization.  The organization was founded in 1843.  It has been a leader in new discoveries in anthropology.

The institute's focus includes all fields of anthropology, including biological anthropology, evolutionary anthropology, social anthropology, cultural anthropology, visual anthropology and medical anthropology, as well as genetics, archaeology and linguistics.

The Institute was originally known as the Ethnological Society of London.  In 1843 there was a breakaway group of the Aborigines' Protection Society, founded in 1837, following the early Quaker campaign against African slavery and the slave trade.

This Journal:

The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, is a quarterly journal with articles on all aspects of anthropology. The Journal provides an important forum for anthropology as a whole, including social anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology and the study of material culture.

The volume's contents are:

1. A 2-page dedication to Sir Edward Burnett Tylor for his 75th birthday, with a mounted photogravure portrait of him as this volume's frontis illustration.   Edward Tylor was a London Quaker and was an important founder of the science of social anthropology. 1896 he became the first Professor of Anthropology at Oxford and he was knighted in 1912.  He studied communities in Mexico and elsewhere.

4. The Head of an Aboriginal Australian by D. J. Dunningham, Professor of anatomy in the University of Edinburgh  

The study of the cranium of an aborigine named Boco, from Haddon Downs, South Australia.

Illustrations include: contour tracing of the head of Boco, comparison of Boco's aboriginal ear with ears of chimpanzee, gorilla, and orangutan, images of the head of Boco the aborigine, etc.

5. The Nilotic Kavirondo by G. A. S. Northcote

The Luo, also called Jaluo and Joluo, are an ethnic group in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. They are part of a larger group who live in the Sudan.  They are relatives of the Aluri and Acholi tribes along the Nile River near Wadilai.

The Luo are the third largest ethnic group in Kenya, after the Kikuyu and the Luhya The Luo and the Kikuyu received most of the political power following Kenya's independence in 1963.

There are no illustrations.

7.  The Bahima: A Cow Tribe of Enkole in the Uganda Protectorate  by Rev. J. Roscoe.

The Bahima, or Bahororo, are a nomadic tribe, including the ruling Hima class. They live in Rujumbura in south western Uganda and are related to the Tutsi of Rwanda. They trace their origin back to the kingdom of Cush in Ethiopia.

A detailed study of their kings, clans, food, death and mourning, death and mourning, sickness, inheritance, adoption, marriage, polygamy, birth, religion, war, taboo, hunting, murder, counting, time, clothing, magic, musical instruments, houses, musical instruments, games, blood brotherhood, salutations, etc.

Illustrations: Two page with 10 photos of the Bahima and Ankole people, and 4 photos of musical instruments, milk containters, gourds, etc.

8. Notes on the Natives of Nyassaland, Northeast Rhodesia and Portuguese Zambezia, their Arts, Customs, and Modes of Subsistence by Captain C. H. Stigand of the Royal West Kent Regiment.

Today Nyassaland is The Republic of Malawi in southeast Africa, home of the Bantu and others.  

Subjects include: arts, burial customs, customs and dance, history, language, mode of subsistence, musical instruments, marriage, ornaments, tobacco and snuff, medicine, hunting, Muslim religion,

9. On the Ethnology of the South-Western Congo Free State by E. Torday and T. A. Joyce

The ethnic groups of the Congo with details of their lifestyles and traditions.  3 full-page illustration plates, with numerous illustrations on each of those plate, showing the people, their clothing, textiles, masks, etc.  Includes a large folding map of the Kwili Basin, Congo Free State, fram a survey by E. Torday, showing the author's route, etc.

10. Alaska:  On the Medicine-Men of the Ten'a by Rev. J. Jette

Details about the Koyukon, an Athabaskan people in central Alaska, on the Yukon River, from Tanana to Koserefsky, including Nulato Mission. These people speak Ten'a, also known as Koyukon.  Subjects include their history, religion, language, beliefs, magic, medicine, ceremonies, fishing, shaman, and a 12-page dictionary and glossary.

11.  Jewelry: Chinese Methods of Cutting Hard Stones by W. L. Hildburgh

Details about stone cutting for jewelry, bottles, teapots, ink stones, sceptres, etc. using jade, crystal, amethyst, agate, quartz, etc. With numerous illustrations in the text.

Bronze archaeology discoveries in Khinaman, Iran, near Kerman, with a full page of illustrations.

13. The Origin of Egyptian Civilisation by Edouard Naville

History of Egypt, including information about tombs, pyramids, Nile River, Egyptology, Heliopolis, language, religion, customs, etc.  No illustrations.

I purchased this book at an estate auction of Dr. John J. B. Light, a physician in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

Condition: Very Nice Condition.  No library or institution markings.  Pages are fresh and clean, with no foxing spots or stains.  Cover is in very nice condition, with No joint cracks or fraying and with very little wear. Very nice condition throughout.
