Dated September 9, 1915, this most interesting four-page letter was written by W.A. Blair, General Manager of the Northern Steamboat Company of Davenport, Iowa. Writing to his attorney in Fountain City, Wisconsin (likely), Blair states, "We landed in Alma [no doubt Wisconsin] in the usual way and at the usual place, with a breeze on shore. Plaintiff: little open flat boat (not worth $20.00) lay just below the jog in the stone wall. When our boat swung in one of our loose hanging {word illegible] near our starboard wheel caught the gunwale of the flat and broke out a chunk perhaps two feet long x 6 in. deep" He continues, reporting that when they set sail a week later, coming out the landing, they once again struck the flat. This time they pulled the smaller craft to shore and made it fast "...on the Minn [Minnesota] side where the injury can be examined." He disclaims any negligence, pointing out that the "Plaintiff was negligent by leaving a light frail boat in the landing or so close to it that a large boat would swing in on it." He proceeds with further explanation, praising the captain and pilot, adding that the current and wind conditions contributed to the mishap, further stating that there are ample witnesses to support his testimony. He plays down the damage inflicted on the flatboat. He writes, "The plaintiff made no attempt to repair...his boat...he tried to throw the job on to us and I absolutely refuse to pay anything in settlement" And how about this for defiance: "We will defend to the last." He instructs the attorney to proceed, with the legalities, adding, "The Etruria case clearly covers this one," apparently referring to a similar accident that could serve as a precedent...a case worth researching for those of you who are historically minded. He closes on a somewhat gloomy note, stating , "We have had a hard season and end it a loser but we can not stand bleeding." The sheets measure 6" x 9 1/2" and are in remarkably nice condition, showing no tears or stains except for a paper clip discoloration on the first page. Note that there are two horizontal envelope creases. The original envelope is not included. Buyer pays $3.75 postage/handling (includes $1.75 insurance). Georgia residents add 6% sales tax. |
