A Rare Philadelphia Atlas
_________________________________________________________________________
This atlas shows the 23rd and 41st wards of Northeast Philadelphia, which
include several regions of the city, including Frankford, Tacony,
Wissinoming, Holmesburg, and Torresdale.
This region of Philadelphia is bordered by the Delaware River and New Jersey
to the east and south, Bensalem Township in Bucks County and Poquessing Creek
to the east, Frankford Creek to the south and west, and lies south of Frankford
Avenue.
The maps include today's Torresdale Avenue, Route 95 / Delaware Expressway,
Cheltenham Avenue, Frankford Avenue, Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Cedar Hills Cemetery,
Mt. Sinai Cemetery, Magnolia Cemetery, Historical Society of Frankford, etc.
This atlas was published a few years after the opening of the Frankford
Elevated Line, which opened in 1922, and is part of today's SEPTA
Market-Frankford Line. This atlas was published the same year as the opening
on the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge in 1929, which is shown in the maps.
Today this region is known for its large Irish-American, Italian-American,
and African-American communities. Tacony was originally founded by
English industrialist Henry Disston. Tacony is home to a minor league
football team called the Tacony Eagles.
The Holmesburg region was named for the descendants of John Holme who immigrated
to Philadelphia in the 1680s. Holmesburg previously was a part of Delaware
Township of Philadelphia County, and was a part of Lower Dublin Township.
