Rare Antique Adlake Carriage Lamp or Railroad Lamp

You are bidding on Antique Adlake Carriage Lamps or Railroad Lamp. Perhaps Military?

Two are pictured but only the lamp on the right is for sale in this auction.

Circa late 1800s or early 1900s.

The Adlake name is a corruption of Adam & Westlake Co. Adlake has been in business since 1857 and is still in business today with headquarters in Indiana.

Very good condition except for some paint loss. See photos. Marked Adlake on the top.

I am not going to put kerosene in them but it appears that they are fully operational.

Adlake was the eminent manufacturer of lamps for the railroad industry. Everything from signal lanterns, switch lights and caboose lamps. They also made high quality carriage lamps.

There is a vent on the side where air entered the chamber for combustion. I believe this "intake" was also the device that made the lamps "Non-sweating." This was an important feature of their railroad switch lamps. As "sweating" could cause the lamp to freeze in the winter and rust to form.

They also manufactured carriage lamps which is what I believe these to be. Because of the green, olive drab, color I wonder if they wee used on military vehicles.

They both have the font and burner. Each burner has a wick and the adjustment key works. The clamps on the rear of the lamps have the original bolts that were tightened onto a mounting fixture.

There is some light rust inside one lamp.

The lens is clear glass and there is a small glass window in the sliding door to check the flame.

Great condition for their age. Some paint loss. See photos.
