Antique Papier Mache Bowler Derby Hat Store Display

Welcome to Robins in the Trundle Bed, brimming with antiques, whimsies, and fripperies that we have gathered in treasure hunts over the New England countryside.  We are pleased to offer this unusual painted black derby bowler hat which would have been used as a store counter display. This is truly a one-of-a-kind piece that weighs 1 pound, 7 ounces!  We are not sure what material it is made from, but is seems to be some type of papier mache or light plaster. The hat is rimmed in real ribbon on the base of its crown and at the top edge of its upturned brim.  It is truly a delightful and rare piece!!

Condition:

The piece is in good to very good antique condition.  The brim has a 4” in length by ½” old repair that has been painted. The material blends with the original material, but is not an exact match.  The hat has scattered paint loss (you can see the material below is white) that can be repainted, but we will leave that up to the new owner!  The inside of the hat is somewhat crudely fashioned.  One photograph shows a light circle, which is from the flash, and not a flaw.

The hat measures 11.5” x 10.5” x by 6 ¼” high.

We are happy to combine shipping if you win multiple items and will contact you after the auction has ended with combined shipping costs.  We strongly suggest that you purchase insurance.
