This is an extremely rare sterling arts & crafts bowl and serving spoon by Marcus & Company of New York. It is circa 1900. Marcus & Company made a small amount of hand wrought silver in the arts & crafts style around the turn of the century. It rarely comes up for sale. The bowl is hand hammered and chased with a fabulous arts and crafts design all around, the hammering is inside and out with a thick band of silver around the rim. It is monogramed with a arts and crafts monogram of MSN, Gates should buy it! The bowl is in excellant condition, it measures 7 1/2" across and 2 1/2" high, there is some surface scratching from cleaning, no dings, repairs or pitting. It weights 12.2 ounces. It is marked Sterling, Marcus & Co and a hallmark used by Marcus on their hollow ware. The spoon is 8" long, weights 3.1 ounces, has the same design and monogram as the bowl. The spoon has more surface scratching than the bowl but otherwise good condition, no dings or pitting. The spoon is marked Sterling, Galt & Co. G. Galt & Co. was a Washington DC high end retailer. Marcus & Company was a maker of very high quality jewelry in New York in the late 1800's in New York. They opened a Department for silversmithing in 1899, the same high standard of excellence which created their prestige as Jewelers was maintained in their silverware. Some of their arts and crafts silver was influenced by the silverware of the English designer Charles Robert Ashbee, such as a two-handled dish in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and an inkwell and a pair of single-handled dishes with amethysts in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
