Gilt Bronze LAPIS VENUS PEACOCKS VICTORY CHARIOT CLOCK



This very fine and important clock originates from France, 18th century movement with verge escapement and quarterstrike on two bells. With gilt bronze and bronze patinated parts and ornaments. The base case with the famous blue Lapis Lazulli Marble (blue marble with gold stuff). On top the gilt bronze sculpture of Venus with staff, the movement case on a four-wheeled victory chariot drawn by two peacocks, guided over the clouds by two winged putti. One putti with quiver, twisted bridles, guitar behind, reliefs and ornaments on the chariot, the marble with reliefs around, much more to see, very impressive piece, please view all the pictures. The movement is 18th century, the total case is of later date. On 6 elaborate engraved feet.
White porcelain enamel dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes numerals and fine gilt early and open hands. Signature : “Berthoud à Paris”.
Early and advanced French clockwork with pendulum on silk suspension, 8 days going work and striking the 1/1 hours and the quarterhours on two silvered bells. Good running and striking condition.
Measurements : at marble base : 25” x 8.5”, total high 24.5”, diameter of movement case 6.25". Total weight around 40 Kg. Overall in perfect condition, a museumpiece, please view the clocks collector's books about this clock.
