Khmer Standing Figure of the Goddess 'Uma', Bayon Period, 2nd half of the 12th Century
Description: We are pleased to offer this wonderfully crafted bronze figure of the divine goddess 'Uma', dating from the Bayon period, second half of the 12th century. Casted in the lost wax method the image is unrepaired and a superb piece in terms of condition.
The image is portrayed standing in a convincing frontal posture on a square plinth, wearing a conical headdress above an arched interconnected diadem (crown) with three circular rosettes. The face with indigenous characteristics has almond-shaped eyes open and the lips appear smiling. Her ear-lobes are elongated with Khmer style triangular shaped pendants falling to her shoulders. Her gracefully curved and well defined shoulders support a lovely jeweled necklace with small hanging pendants.
The goddess holds in her left hand an 'Utpala', a blue lotus, which symbolizes purity and spiritual elevation. The body is slender and she is wearing a long complex garment, intricately patterned and folds over a highly decorative belt secured around her hips. A beautifully stylized fish-tail flap drapes in compound plates to the bottom of the garment's hem. She is elaborately adorned with jewelry, bangles on her upper arms, anklets and lotus flowers. The figure is complemented by a fine natural malachite (bluish-green) patina, heavily encrusted from hundreds of years of oxidation and the burial environment.
This skillfully executed image of Uma is a stylistic example of the Khmer culture and its dynamic artistry. Its creator has modeled a gracious interpretation of this divine goddess and embraced the main characteristics of the Bayon female images.
