This is one of the rarest and most ephemeral pieces that I've ever had. The paper actually looks colonial, but is in the post Civil War War Era. This a 19th Century Gum Wrapper. This is Adams Black Jack Gum. According to the history that I found on the net. Thomas Adams (1818-1905) was credited with inventing chewing gum, when he put out his "Adam's New York Chewing Gum" , post Civl War in 1871, but there were other gums earlier like spruce gum in Maine. Adams still gets the credit for the wider marketing and more popular flavors for the gum. This wrapper is from "Adam's Black Jack", put out in 1884. The wrapper reads as best that I can that the other flavors are Carmel, Red Rose, Tutti-Frutti, Sapota, Tula, and Oolah.. He is promoting the gum's healthful nature by his notice on the wrapper, "See letter from Dr. Doremus on inside of box on purity and Healthfulness". I am selling this wrapper completely "as found". It is would have been wrapped around a ball of gum, more like hard candy is today. The paper is quality paper, and stronger paper, which is why it survived at all, but on the very thin side and old, so there is expected creases, some paper loss and therefore minor loss to the text, and some tiny tears in this piece. If I were keeping this item, I would get it flattened out as best that I could and have it properly framed with acid free materials, that would preserve it and it would present well. For now, I have it as best that I can and have it in a rigid plastic sleeve tp protect it. Gum wrappers would have been treated back in the 19th Century much the same as we do today, they would have discarded and treated as trash. So this is the "ultimate" of ephemera. It is amazing that it survived at all, let alone in the relatively intact condition that this one did, as it so old, frail and ephemeral. Chances are that if you would like to have a vintage example of a gum wrapper like this, especially anytime soon, you will likely need to get it here. I am pleased to offer this rare and fascinating glimpse into a bygone era. I will include the major page of write up that I found on the net about this item, with this wrapper to the winning bidder. Check out my other items! I tend to like the old, unusual, scarce and possibly unique items. If this is your interest also, then check out my other listings. I do combine your winning auctions to save you money on shipping costs. Let me know if you want insurance. I do give "frequent flyers" breaks. I DO NOT sell to Poland or Spain. The mail is too slow and complaints are too high, mail delivery rates have been 1-2 months!. Postcards are shipped in cardboard and rigid plastic sleeves to protect from damage, I DO NOT profit from postage. The postage cost for outside the US is $3.00 for postcards in the rigid protector. Please inquire regarding postage rates for other items outside of the US. Thanks, Bob, Roger ** Please use the email rmiller2@stny.rr.com for payment to paypal. ![]() |
