Three rare 1958 "Stars of Jazz: TV jazzcast, hosted by Bobby Troup. B/W, over an hour. oOiginal as broadcast in '58 with Bud commercials from early TV jazz series. Featured are Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All Stars playing West Coast jazz, with Shorty Rogers, Bud Shank. Julie London sings Free and Easy and Midnight Sun on the first show. Second show ffeatures Rumsey group with vocals by June Christy singing That's All and I Want to Be Happy. On the programs the group plays songs like All the Things You Are, The Nearness of You, Somebody Loves Me, Witch Doctor --with Bob Cooper, Frank Rosolino and Victor Feldman in the group. Third program features The Firehouse Five Plus Two Plus One doing Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea among their numbers--dixielandish. Also singer Barbara Dane does a couple blues vocals. Originaly taped by Video Yesteryear quite a while ago -was on VHS (out of print) and has been transferred to DVD. Previously viewed. Rare television jazz of the 50s, which was something of a rarity. The sound is overall good - better than the video which is only OK but viewable, but keep in mind it's original video from 50 years ago, just after kinescope had ended. That's why it's rare and done by collectors FOR collectors. So it's returnable if not satisfied. Thanks. |
