| This is a wonderful early19th Century Pennsylvania Folk Art Wood Horse Mechanical Pull Toy. It probably dates to the 1830's. When pulled along a wire attached to the wheel axle moves the head and tail up and down. The wire, with loops at either end, is attached to the front axle and a small wire ring at the lower back side of the neck. A string connects the wire and the tail. The head and tail pivot on small wires which pass through them and the torso. It measures approximately 8" long x 7-3/4" high x 2-1/2" wide, the horse is about 6-1/2" long x 6" high x 2" wide and the base is 6-3/4" long x 2-1/2" wide. The base is a 1/4" thick hand-sawn board. The body, head and tail are carved from solid pieces of wood. The hooves have projecting mortises which are securely glued in round holes in the base. The body, head and tail are painted with a thick white paint which has darkened to a cream color over time. The torso, legs and head are lightly stippled with black paint. Also painted in black are the collar/reins on the shoulders and the bridle on the head. The eyes are round black dots outlined with narrow brown lines. Two small metal nail heads are at each corner of the mouth, apparently to represent the bit. Small fragments of leather under the left nail and pieces of glue on the bridle suggest reins that are missing. A small fagment of red and black paper on the right rump may be part of a blanket which ran over the rump. A small piece of glue on the opposite rump may be where the other end was secured. The mouth is painted red and two crudely shaped pins are inserted in holes in the head to represent the ears. The base has a central cream-colored area, apparently to represent a road, and bands of green swirls along the edge, to represent foliage. There is a small round hole near the front edge, probably for a pull cord which is missing, and 7/8" slot for the wire leading from the body to the front axle. The crudeness of this toy and that the horse leans to the right suggest that it was not made by a professional woodworker. That it passed through a general store is indicated by a pencil notation on the bottom. This consists of a line with "VSI" above and "25" below. The top is likely the storekeepers cost in secret code and the selling price of 25 cents below. My research failed to reveal another pull toy of this type in published sources or on-line. This unique folk art horse is in good working order. The torso has several cracks, scratches and areas of missing paint. The head was once broken and glued and has several areas of missing paint. The buyer pays a flat pack/ship fee of $15.00 (continental U.S.). Please email any questions. |
