Item specifics
Main Color: PolychromeMaterial: Porcelain
Purpose: DecorativePrimary Material: Ceramic & Porcelain
Type: Figurines & Statues

Beautiful pair of porcelain hummingbird or Colibri bird figurines from Herend's 'Aviary Collection' in excellent condition.

Very fine quality porcelain molded in the form of a matching pair of birds with forked tails perched on stumps with fruits and leaves around the bases, very well sculpted where the pose of one charmingly compliments the other. Entirely hand-decorated with pale polychrome enamels, under a high sheen glaze. Bases unglazed.
Pieces from this mold 5110 (and its mate 5111) are still being produced by Herend today but usually finished in stronger natural coloring or in 'fishnet'. I have never seen them in this pastel colorway before and would guess that it's really quite rare to find, and even more rare to find a matching pair.

This auction closes on Sunday evening (eastern time).

Marks:  Stamped under the glaze with a blue HUNGARY in a glazed well in the base. Also a typical Herend handwritten design number inscribed into the porcelain, 5111 on one and 5110 on the other.

Date:  Early to mid 20th century.

Condition:  Excellent condition. There's a tiny nick on the front of the footrim of the ‘tail up’ bird that looks like it could have been there in the making as it has glaze around its edges. The ‘tail down’ bird has a factory flaw –a glazed over shrinkage crack– on the underside of its left wing. Otherwise, absolutely no chips, hairlines, cracks, scratches, crazing or repairs. Tips of both beaks and ends of tails perfect, no roughness or losses.

Size:  ‘Tail up’ is 4.2 inches long from beak to tail by 3.4 inches tall. ‘Tail down’ is approximately 4 inches long and just under 3 inches tall.
