The Cashew (Anacardium occidentale) is a tree in the flowering plant family Anacardiaceae. The plant is native to northeastern Brazil, where it is called by its Portuguese name Caju (the fruit) or Cajueiro (the tree). It is now widely grown in tropical climates for its cashew "nuts" and apples. It is a small evergreen tree growing to 10-12 m tall, with a short, often irregularly-shaped trunk.

Cashews have been called “nature’s vitamin pill,” being a rich source of vitamins, minerals, proteins and “good fats.” The nuts are the kidney-shaped seeds of the cashew apple which is the fruit of the cashew tree. The nutrient content of cashew nuts includes copper, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, protein and a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids which help promote heart health. With their 50% fat content cashews are considered to be fattening, but the ratio of saturated:monounsaturated:polyunsaturated fatty acids they contain is ideal for human consumption – 1:2:1 – and ideal for promoting the health benefits of consuming foods with unsaturated fats. Consumed in moderation along with other nutrient-dense foods, raw cashew nuts provide an extremely healthy addition to your diet.

For example, copper plays a role in several physiological processes, such as elimination of free radicals, metabolism of iron, and the production of bone and connective tissue.  Magnesium is essential for the healthy function of the heart muscle and contributes to the regulation of blood pressure.

Navitas Natural’s cashews come from Brazil and are raw, organically grown and guaranteed to be as fresh as possible. To obtain maximum nutritional value, they are best eaten raw. If they are to be roasted, the oven temperature should not exceed 170 degrees F, or 75 degrees C. Higher temperatures will break down the chemical bonds of the heart-healthy fats, thus reducing the health benefits of consuming this nutrient-rich functional food. Roasting time should be 20 minutes.
