He has been bursting boundaries and conquering genres since the '50s, assimilating strains of jazz, country, gospel, Top-40 pop, and easy-listening balladeering into his own unique R&B-flavored concoction. It should then be no surprise that this 1996 release finds Charles continuing to refine his soulful hybrid, here adding the contemporary flavors of bass and drum programming, thick keyboards, and smooth production. STRONG LOVE AFFAIR runs the gamut of danceable grooves, deep blues, horn-fortified funk, and tender love songs-all punctuated with Charles' raw and inimitable vocal delivery. While it may be hard for some to reconcile the glossy, synth-coated feel of the opening "All She Wants To Do Is Love Me" with the rootsy Ray of yore, the changes are in keeping with his past. Charles is always pushing himself, keeping apace with the times, and merging his soulful, searing emotionality with current pop styles. Even when his lyrics include references to Versace swimwear, this legend's music always bears his distinctive flair.
