Description Capsicum annuum F1 Hybrid bell peppers from Holland, also known as sweet peppers, are like the Christmas ornaments of the vegetable world since they are beautifully shaped, glossy in appearance and come in a variety of vivid colors such as green, red, yellow, orange, purple, brown and black. Despite their varied palette, all are the same plant, known scientifically as Capsicum annuum, and are members of the nightshade family, which also includes potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant. Bell peppers have a delightful, slightly watery crunch. Green and purple peppers have a slightly bitter flavor, while the red, orange and yellows are sweeter and almost fruity.
The nutritional breakdown of Capsicum is as follows: Fats: 9-17%, proteins: 12-15%, vitamin A and red carotenoids (capsanthin, carotene, lutein), ascorbic acid (vitamin C), B-complex vitamins, potassium: 2014 mg per 100 edible grams, rutin (flavonoid). Note: Capsicum’s red color is due in part to its very high content of vitamin A, which is vital for normal vision, cellular activity, growth and strong immune defenses.
Cooking information Stir fry with beef, chicken or pork with carrot. Cook with tomatoes, onions garlic. Capsicum curry. Stuffed Capsicum. |

How to grow Requires a very warm sunny position and a fertile well-drained soil. Prefers a light sandy soil that is slightly acid. Tolerates a pH in the range 4.3 to 8.3. Sow the seed late winter to early spring in a warm greenhouse. The seed usually germinates in 3 - 4 weeks at 20øc. Prick out the seedlings into individual pots of reasonably rich soil and grow them on fast. If trying them outdoors, then plant them out after the last expected frosts and give them the protection of a cloche or frame at least until they are established and growing away well. Most gardeners find that only a few plants, perhaps one or two, of each variety are needed. These should be spaced 12-18 inches apart. If several rows are required, space them 30-36 inches apart (row center to row center). Planting two or three plants in a single hill is also acceptable. Transplant recommended after 8 - 10 weeks. Grow in full sun. The chili will form after the flower wilt. Maturity period - Approximate 12 to 15 weeks.
