The .356 Winchester is basically a rimmed .358 Winchester for use in traditional lever-action rifles. It is a companion cartridge to the .307 Winchester, and both were introduced in modified Winchester 94 rifles designed to handle higher pressures than those of the .30-30 cartridge. The .356 gives the lever rifle hunter a significant increase in performance over the .35 Remington, and can be used on game up to elk and moose if the range isn't too great. 

Winchester's .358 and the 35 Whelen which preceded it by 36 years may be considered parallel developments. The .358 is a necked up .308 Winchester cartridge and the .35 Whelen is a necked up .30-06. Winchester introduced its .358 in 1955 and chambered its Models 70 and 88 for the new cartridge.
