history of scrimshaw

Scrimshaw was derived from the shipboard practice of sailors creating tools while aboard whaling ships at sea. The term originally referred to the making of these tools; however, later it was adapted to describe the artwork made by whalers in their free time. Because the work of whaling was extremely dangerous, whalers were unable to work at night. Consequently, this offered them much more downtime than the typical sailor, enabling them to pursue hobbies, one of which was scrimshaw. Early scrimshaw was done with crude sailing needles, and the movement of the ship, as well as the skill of the artist, produced drawings of varying levels of detail and artistry. Originally, candle soot or tobacco juice was used to bring the etching into view. These scrimshaw pieces became marketable in the early 1800s due to the Chinese demand from the American whalers in the Pacific. Chinese traders would purchase scrimshaw from sailors and then trade for valuable items from Pacific Islanders. The greed of American and British oil companies all but wiped out whale populations in the 1900s, and along with it the art form of scrimshaw. Extremely tight International regulations on the sale and trade of Marine Mammal Ivory are now employed worldwide.
