The Herd: 42 x 64 inches, oil on Canvas, 2008
Rich Zubaty is a political artist, author, world traveler and the Mad Hermit of Molokai. He has lived in 25 countries in Europe, Asia, South America and the South Pacific, creating his oil painting series: “Disappearing Lifestyles”. He received a Puffin Foundation Grant to continue painting this record of people around the globe, enacting thousand-year-old sustainable workstyles, whose livelihood is daily threatened by the onslaught of globalization.
The Herd is a village scene from the Oaxacan Mountains of Mexico. A small-time rancher is herding his cows and goats and sheep through the outskirts of town to a greener pasture, as his ancestors have been since the Spanish arrived in 1500.
Acquiring this stunning, finely detailed painting, is not only a wise investment in an artist of growing stature, but also a wise investment in the future of human ecology.
We’re always happy to see Rich drag himself away from his crumbling beach shack studio, onto the Molokai/Maui ferry, and bring us over some of the paintings he’s been hoarding. Hope he brings us more.
