Richard Arlen ~
This is a vintage original cigarette card form the series Film-Fotos from Ramses Cigarettes. Issued in about 1932. This is card #343. It is smaller than a US baseball card (about 1½"x2¼"). This particular example is in excellent condition.
Born Cornelius Richard Van Mattimore in Virginia in 1898, Richard Arlen was one of the American volunteers fighting against the Germans even before the United States entered World War I. Arlen served in the Royal Canadian Flying Corps as a pilot which, at least to a small degree, mirrors his most famous role in the 1927 partial-sound film Wings.
After the war, Arlan eventually wound up in Los Angeles, where he got a job as a motorcycle messenger at a film laboratory. When he crashed into the gates of Paramount Pictures and suffered a broken leg, the studio provided prompt medical attention. Impressed by his good looks, executives also gave him a contract. Starting as an extra in 1925, Arlen soon rose to credited roles.
Arlan's big break came when William A. Wellman cast him as a pilot in the sound/silent film Wings (1927) with Charles 'Buddy' Rogers and Clara Bow. This story of WWI fighter aces won the Oscar for Best Picture. Arlen continued to play the tough, cynical hero throughout his career. He appeared in three more Wellman pictures, Beggars of Life (1928), Ladies of the Mob (1928) and The Man I Love (1929).
In Wings he had a scene with a young actor named Gary Cooper. In 1929, he again worked with Cooper in the western The Virginian (1929), only this time Cooper was the star and Arlen was the supporting actor. Arlen moved easily into sound, but, by 1935 he was working in B movies.
In 1935, although released from his contract with Paramount Pictures, Arlan continued to work in film for MGM, Colombia, United Artists, Twentieth Century-Fox, Republic Pictures, and others. Perhaps on the strength of his performance as Gaston Rogers in James Oliver Curwood's masterpiece Call of the Yukon (1938) Arlen signed with Universal in 1939.
In 1941 he moved to the Pine-Thomas unit at Paramount, where he appeared in adventure films. With the war on, most of his earlier films included war scenarios. By the end of the 1940s Arlen was becoming deaf and this seemed to signal the end of his career. However, he had an operation in 1949 that restored his hearing and he went on making a handful of adventures and westerns through the 1950s and working more in the 1960s. He made fifteen films with classic Western producer A.C. Lyles.
Besides movies, Arlen also appeared on television and in commercials. After leaving the business in the late 1960s, he was coaxed back to the screen for three small roles in films that were released the same year that he died, 1976.

I Accept Most Types of Electronic Payments
This lot consists of a genuine German cigarette premium issued between about 1930 and 1937. In general, German cigarette cards and premiums make an interesting and inexpensive addition to any collection. The Nazi government of Germany opposed smoking and eventually put an end to cigarette cards. As a result, the native German card collecting hobby never developed to the extent of that in Britain or the United States. As a result, most German premiums and cards cost only a fraction of what might be expected from their American and British cousins.
Large photos are shown smaller than actual size while small ones are generally enlarged to as much as twice their original size. Almost all photos and cards are scanned through protective sleeves or pages which tends to cut the clarity a bit. Enlarged defects tend to look worse than they actually are. Minimum postage (for a small card) is just a buck and feel free to accumulate many lots for the same postage. 5"x7" photos require additional postage.
