In
1966, the U.S. Navy was ordered to deploy a Riverine Assault Force (RAF) to the
Mekong Delta region of South Vietnam. This new force would require boats to
navigate the thousands of rivers and canals, and transport combat troops into
action. Not since the Civil War had the United States engaged in any large
scale riverine combat operations. With no specialized riverine craft in the
inventory, the U.S. Navy searched for an immediate solution. The answer was to
convert existing shallow-draft landing craft into armor-clad river assault
boats.
Now,
for the first time, you can see how these historically important boats were
built. This CD contains over 80 extremely rare 18" x 24" boat plans
of the LCM(6) conversion process for various Vietnam War River Assault Craft
(RAC). See how the Monitor (MON), Command and Communications Boat (CCB), and
Armored Troop Carrier (ATC) were built right down to the nuts and bolts. These
plans will also dispel several myths; including that the assault boats were
painted Olive Drab.
These
long-lost plans were in very poor condition, which have been nicely restored
and are suitable for large format printing. Indexed and arranged for easy
viewing, this is the ultimate reference guide for scale modelers, historians,
and authors.
