River Scene near Hong Kong Original Watercolour Painting c.1932
by E. Kato A very fine watercolour painting by E. Kato depicting a river scene near Hong Kong. The whole scene is somewhat overcast, the sky is misty and pale and the trees in the background are shrouded in mist. The painting is a superb example of Kato's work an remains in very fine condition. A first class work by an artist of the highest calibre this painting would grace any home or collection. The painting is presented in a giltwood frame and is not glazed. The painting is one of four paintings by Kato that we have had avaiable for sale; one was lined with a copy of the South China Morning Post, printed in Hong Kong on 20th April 1932, presumably the other three were painted at around the same time. The painting is signed lower right. A larger painting than our offering, a daytime view of the harbour looking North was sold by Christie's Hong Kong in 1993 for 218,500 HKD (28,267 US$). Original watercolours by Kato are worth thousands, often tens of thousands of pounds. Snapshots of results for similar paintings are included in the photograph section below. This superb work measures : Painting: 25.5cm (10") x 33cm (13") Frame: 42cm (16.5") x 53cm (21") Please phone 0870 86 35 808 to pay by credit card, if you have any questions please either ask a question through Ebay or call us. Art as an Investment In these uncertain financial times tangible assets such as gold and art are being recommended as a safer alternative to stocks and shares by many leading experts. “Companies go bust, artists don’t,” said David Douglas an Irish art expert of the recent economic turmoil. Damien Hirst's phenomenally successful sale at Sotheby's recently illustrates that high end art is able to prosper in an economic downturn. Less well publicised are the examples of the many thousands of lesser known artists whose work continues to increase in price when offered at auction.
