The TRIOS CD includes a 31-page booklet with session photographs of the artists.
Rob Wasserman has defined a variety of bold new roles for the bass on his Clevinger 6-string upright, and on this ambitious release, the final chapter in the trilogy which began with SOLO and DUETS, he establishes himself as a consummate artist, at home in any style of music, from improvised jazz and classical chamber styles, to rock and funk.
Wasserman's collaborators are numbered among the who's who in contemporary music: Brian Wilson, Elvis Costello, Bruce Hornsby, Edie Brickell, Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, Bob Weir and Les Claypool of Primus. The performances Wasserman elicits from his all-stars transcend the usual "super session" jumble. "Fantasy Is Reality/Bells Of Madness" teams him with Brian Wilson and Carnie Wilson, and the results are both extraordinarily lyrical and emotionally chilling. Elvis Costello's "Put Your Big Toe In The Milk Of Human Kindness" is given a sardonic, Django Reinhardt-like treatment, while "American Popsicle" (with Edie Brickell and Jerry Garcia) has a spontaneous, Eastern feel.
Wasserman stands front and center on his solo bass performances (a spirited arrangement of the Stones' "Satisfaction") and in the classical trio, but it is a rambunctious trio with drummer Al Duncan and songwriting legend Willie Dixon (in his last recording) on "Dustin' Off The Bass" which sums up all that is joyous and dancing in American popular music--and the role of the bass within it.

Editorial reviews
5 Stars - Excellent - ...[TRIOS is] eclectic in its musical vision, [but] maintains a cohesive unity throughout...a bass lover's dream, Wasserman not only stretches the sonic possibilities of the instrument, he explores its expressiveness, range, and flexibility....
Down Beat  (04/01/1994)

3 Stars - Good - ...In the end, TRIOS is not so much a dazzling array of permutations as an exceedingly well-conceived learning experience....
Rolling Stone  (06/02/1994)

...Wasserman gives some spirited performances. He has a wonderfully melodic and earthy bass sound...
Audio Magazine  (06/01/1994)

 REVIEW-

Bassist extraordinare picks up from the previous duets release with this set of trios. Most of these songs were written for this project, some even improvised on the spot as in the case of the Edie Brickell, Wasserman, Garcia cuts. Elvis Costello, along with Marc Ribot, are great. There are some bass instrumentals but the best is "Fantasy Is Reality" written by Sam Philips and Brian Wilson and sung by his daughter Carnie.

i really love the brian wilson contribution "bells of madness"...really cool song. also elvis costello's "milk of human kindness" is great. the most boring stuff on here is wasserman's solo compositions. contrary to the previous reviewer's comments, the collaborations on here are excellent overall _______________________________________________________________________________________________________
A MUST FOR ANY ROB WASSERMAN MUSIC FAN!!!!!!

First the good: Rob Wasserman plays a great bass, and any song you will find examples of his talent.
Hornsby's "White-Wheeled Limo" has a nice jazzy feel to it, with this particular trio in fine balance (Wasserman/Hornsby and Branford Marsalis)
All three of Wasserman's one man "Trios" are worth your time and really show off the instrument's range well.
The highlight of the CD for me: Willie Dixon's "Dustin' Off the Bass" a song that just showcases a great talent with a song that just exemplifies the skill and joy of this artist.
"Easy Answers" and "Home is Where You Get Across" don't seem to fit in with the rest of this recording, they are angrier and have a more anxious tone probably befitting the rest of the trio on each; Bob Weir/Neil Young on the former and Chris Whitley and Les Claypool on the latter (some phenomenal pickin' on this one)
Now the bad:
Brian and Carnie Wilson contribute something called "Fantasy is Reality" and it is as bad as the title suggests- slow, nonsensical lyrics and no point to its existence.
I'm a big Elvis Costello fan but his contribution is just terrible; this is another one given away by its title, "Put Your Big Toe in the Milk of Human Kindness"
Edie Brickell doing her impression of New Bohemians whimsy with the dopey song "Zillionaire" Jerry Garcia is supposed to be here someplace as well, but I couldn't listen to this more than a few times without banging my head against a speaker. Then I heard "American Popsicle" by the same pair and I want to take back what I said about "Zillionaire." This is worse. Sometimes improvisation doesn't work.
Gypsy I and II take too long to develop for short pieces. They were OK but feel out of place here.
Wasserman likes to experiment and this definitely is an experiment. I'm always willing to take the good (when it is this good) with the bad. This is why you can program CD players. ________________________________________________________

BIOGRAPHIES-

A very versatile bassist, Rob Wasserman has gained fame for his trilogy of recording projects accurately titled Solo, Duets and Trios. Wasserman began playing the violin when he was 12, not switching to bass until he was already 20. Within a year he was studying at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and playing with drummer Charles Moffett. The classical training he had received on violin plus owning a very open mind have both come in handy frequently throughout his career. Wasserman picked up early experience working with Dan Hicks, Maria Muldaur, Van Morrison and Oingo Boingo. In 1983, he recorded Solo for Rounder which received very strong reviews. Soon afterward, Wasserman became a longtime member of David Grisman's group and he also has had lengthy stints with Lou Reed, Elvis Costello and the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir. Duets in 1988 matched Wasserman with seven very diverse singers (including Bobby McFerrin, Ricky Lee Jones, Cheryl Benyne and Lou Reed) and violinist Stephane Grappelli. 1993's Trios has appearances by such performers as Jerry Garcia, Brian and Carnie Wilson, Willie Dixon, Branford Marsalis and Elvis Costello among others. Although he has worked throughout much of his career as a featured sideman, Rob Wasserman's three recordings as a leader are his most notable musical accomplishments thus far. The space-rock influenced Space Island blasted off in late 2000, exploring new textures and incorporating hip-hop and electronic elements. He spent the next several years playing with Ratdog and appearing with Gov't Mule and Rikki Lee Jones before returning to solo work and releasing Cosmic Farm, a fusion date featuring guitarist Craig Erickson, T. Lavitz on keys and Jeff Sipe on drums.
