Roger Maris SIGNED Card PLUS
Tom Gorman, Clete Boyer and Bobby Shantz
SIGNED "The Kansas City Athletics"
by Ernest Mehl (Henry Holt and Co., 1956)
RARE 1st Edition, 1st Printing

Included in this auction is a 2x4" card which has been signed by Roger Maris, a prominent American Major League Baseball player and Hall of Fame inductee!  Maris is best remembered for the record number of home runs (61) he hit for the New York Yankees during the 1961 season.  That record broke Babe Ruth's single-season home run record of 60 and it would stand for 37 years.  Maris appeared in seven World Series during his career and won three World Championships!  The card has been mounted (with corner holders, not adhesive) to the top section of the free front end page.  A fantastic collector's item!

Details on the included book, The Kansas City Athletics: FlatSigned by three former Major League Baseball players and members of the Kansas City Athletics: Tom Gorman (pitcher), Clete Boyer (shortstop and second base), and Bobby Shantz (pitcher)!  This book is a biography of that team.  "Ernest Mehl, Sports Editor of the Kansas City Star for many years, followed closely the developments that led to the transfer of the well-known ball club to his native city; and he now records the whole fabulous story, which is guaranteed a place of importance in the annals of baseball history."

All signatures have been certified by Global Authentication Inc., the premier authentication service! Hardcover in original jacket with a warm non-personal inscription ("With Very Best Wishes, Sincerely"), three signatures and an authentication sticker on the free front end page (GAI # GV 409015).  Maris's signature has also been certified (GAI # GV 409016)  Includes several pages of photographs.  "First Edition" is stated on the copyright page.  $2.95 price is intact on jacket.

Jacket and book have aged moderately well but show some signs of wear.  Jacket has some rubbing and small tears on some edges with some paper loss, some light toning and dusting throughout, tips of flap corners have been clipped (presumably by the printer), but no text has been affected.  Book has original green cloth-bound boards with red spine lettering, some light bumping and rubbing on top and bottom edges, some faint dusting and small dampstains on boards, binding remains relatively tight.  Pages are clean aside from small dampstains on the lower outside edges of some of the pages (no rippling, no text affected).  No stray marks or inscriptions from previous owners.

About FlatSigned Rare Books
What does flatsigned mean? Back to Top
The world s best-selling author, Stephen King, accidentally coined the term flatsigned. King needed to differentiate whether he should sign only his name (flatsigned) or inscribe the book to an individual.

In talking with his office, I found out that Mr. King incorrectly believed that this term was being used in the book-collecting world. At that time, it was not a term used in the industry. Frustratingly, there was no true distinctive term given to books inscribed to a previous owner or those signed on bookplates then stuck into a book versus those just signed by the author, or flatsigned.
