Bidding has ended on this item. Item:Round Coiled Vintage Inuit Alaskan Indian Basket |
Up for auction is an old basket woven by a talented Inuit artist from Alaska. This is a round coiled basket, and quite pretty and well-crafted for one of this genre. It features a thick coiled weave and a pattern of subtle geometric triangle shapes arrayed around the start. It also has a hanger cleverly fashioned by elongating part of the rim weave. The rim end is gradually tapered and finished off. The basket is also old enough to have developed a lovely aged patina. Beautiful weaving!
The basket is a nice medium size, measuring 9" in diameter and with a definite depth to it, about 1½" deep. Because of its age, it has a couple of flaws. If you look carefully, you can see a flaw on the handle where the grass wraps are loosened in one spot. But that is the extent of the damage. None of the coils are separated or broken, and the hanger is still firmly attached. The pretty colors are still visible, as the photos show. This is a lovely example of vintage innovative Native American weaving and will make a beautiful addition to someone's collection of Eskimo or Alaskan Indian baskets.
