Each year Rowe Pottery Works
introduces a new collection of historical pottery that reflects the
culture of generations past.
When
paired with a pitcher, bowls like this
were used for washing in the privacy of
the bed room, when running water was a
luxury.
APPROXIMATE SIZE:
14" wide x 3.5" high
The Bowl is hand crafted
in salt glaze pottery with the
dark brownish toned ash glaze finish and made in
Wisconsin USA.
Being hand
crafted, it is
customary to find small differences on
each piece of pottery, as the company
does not consider these blemishes, but
rather, considers anything different
to be a unique characteristic of
that piece of pottery.
To create the historical series,
the Rowe craftsmen use salt glazing techniques dating back to the
16th Century.
The bumpy, orange-peel surface
along with the brown, green & dark
grey colorations are all
characteristics of this traditional
pottery making process as it was
fired in wood burning kilns.
As you can see on the bottom, the
dark brown finish is heavier on one
side than on the other. On the
darkest brown part, the surface has
a dull almost matte look.
The
Rowe Pottery mark is incised on the side.
An information card about the
Historical Series comes with the
bowl.
