Royal Cumberland Pottery Birds
By Frank Wheaton Pottery
Stangl Art Pottery
This bird figurine is the Stangl Chickadee #3581 made by Royal Cumberland from the Stangl mold. As a collector of Stangl birds you can see this to be true. The bird is done in white rather then in the bright colors of the stangl birds. I have added information on the conection of Stangl and Royal Cumberland so the new collector can see how they go together. This figurine is free chips, cracks and crazing. It is marked with the RC USA as with most Royal Cumberland Figures. It will make a nice addition to your collection. There are spots under the glaze like a the bird got drops of other colors on it at the factory, the are very minor but thought I would let you know.
Info on Stangl, Wheaton and Royal Cumberland
After Martin Stangl's death in 1972, Stangl Pottery was bought by Frank Wheaton. Frank Wheaton attempted to run the company (with little success) until 1978 when he decided to close the pottery and sold off all the assets (including the real estate, name, and inventory) to the Pfalzgraftf Pottery Company. Pfalzgraph immediately sold off the inventory and converted the Flemington Stangl outlet into a Pfalzgraff outlet. The one thing that Frank Wheaton did keep were the original Stangl molds. These molds were reused by him at his plant in Millville, New Jersey throughout the 1980s to make a number of bird figurines. A few birds were distributed under the Wheaton Industries name. These birds can be found in numerous colors. The vast majority of the birds produced by Wheaton after Stangl's close were made for Royal Doulton and sold under the "Royal Cumberland" name. These "Royal Cumberland" birds were typically plain white or were white with yellow highlights. Typically these birds were marked Royal Cumberland or RC, though some (including many of the 3250 series ducks) were not marked.
