Presented here for consideration is a Royal Doulton Dickens Ware Rheims Tea Cup & Saucer. As is most often the way with these sets the character is different on the saucer to the cup; Cap’n Cuttle is on the cup and Sairey Gamp is on the saucer.

The Dickens Ware series was first introduced in 1908, modified in 1912, 1917 and 1931. In 1951 a new pattern number was introduced D.6327, but production was reduced to a trickle of three or four shapes, by the late 1950’s it had stoped altogether.

Attached to my Nicholnack art in pottery website is my Dickens Ware Fact-file where I show all the scenes available in this series in several colour-ways - with dating information and absolutely stacks of information on Dickens Ware shapes. Both the cup and the saucer have the Dickens Ware makers mark and printed by hand in black ink is the pattern number D.2973.

  • Dimensions

The saucer has a diameter of 14 cm (5.5”) and when the cup is on the saucer it is 7.5 cm (3”) tall.

  • Condition

The magical set is in excellent condition, with NO chips, cracks, stains or repairs. The cup does exhibit crazing, but the saucer is not crazed. There is a strange spot of discolouration on the rim of the cup, there is minute miss in the green rim strip and then under it is a small lesion of discolouration (see close up photo below, this lesion can also be seen in the photo above on the left of the rim).

This is NOT a repair and there is no damage to the glaze where the miss is and the glaze over the legion is crazed. It appears as if the green rim strip was smudged before firing – I take the time to mention this minor production flaw so there can be no questions after purchase.

This is a very collectable series, and for some reason cups and saucers is hard to come by. Hit the BUY IT NOW tab and make sure this delight is not pilfered right out from under your nose.
