It is a pleasure to present this impressive Royal Doulton Ploughing Joan shaped tea pot. Ploughing is one of the series I specialize in and this is only the second time that I have ever had a Teapot in this pattern. The Ploughing series was introduced in 1915, added to in 1929 and it had been withdrawn from production by 1948.

Attached to my Nicholnack art in pottery website I have collection of Fact-files regarding Royal Doulton Series Ware, along with Fact-files dedicated to Doulton Shapes I have a created a Ploughing Fact-file. In this fact file I identify 8 scenes unique to this series.

This is scene 5; “Ploughman with 3 horses in harness another pair in the background.”. Hand written on the base in black ink is the pattern number D.4934. It has the black stamped maker’s mark of the style that was in use from 1902 until 1932. The pattern number D4934 was introduced in 1929 so this gives this magnificent teapot a production era of 1929 to 1932.

  • Dimensions

This beauty is a 6 cup teapot; it measures 22.5 cm (8.75”) across the top from the edge of the handle to the lip of the spout and it stands a proud 14.5 cm (5.75”) tall.

  • Condition 

It is in EXCELLENT used condition; with NO chips, cracks or repairs. As is most often the case with production of this style and vintage it does exhibit some crazing, this pot has been used so there are traces of tea staining to the crazing on the bottom of the pot, this is very minor, but I must mention for complete accuracy. There is also a small rub to the green strip on the end of the spout - this is smooth - it is not a chip or a repair (see close up photo below).

 

Ploughing is a popular series, it is hard to come by and it always sells relatively quickly. I have sold over 1500 piece of series ware and this is the only the second teapot I have seen in this series.
