Presented here for consideration is a Royal Doulton Roger De Coverley Corinth Chamber Stick or Candle Stick. On page 53 of volume 1 of Royal Doulton Series Ware; Louise Irvine list the 17 different scenes known to be in this series, she lists this as scene 5 - “Sir Roger visiting the widow in her parlour.”

This popular series is based on a character created by Thomas Steele for The Spectator; a literary magazine, which was first published in London in 1712. This delightful series was intorduced in 1911, changes where made to the range in 1930 and 1937 and it had been withdrawn by 1949.

It has a special maroon Sir Roger De Coverley back-stamp. Written by hand in black ink is the pattern number D.3418, this is the earliest pattern number attributed to this series; it dates from 1911.

  • Dimensions

This impressive chamber stick strides in at 16.5 cm (6.5”) tall and it measures 9.5 cm (3.75”) diagonally across the base.

  • Condition

It is in EXCELLENT condition; with no chips, cracks, stains or repairs. As is most often the case with production of this vintage and style; it does exhibit clean crazing – nothing hideous – but enough to impart a delightful antique patina..
