This world famous French Maritime Order was established on the 9.2.1930. In three classes: Commanders, Officers, and Knights. It is maritime medal awarded to the services of the French merchant navy or shipping. In many cases it is has been awarded for Gallantry (Bravery) on the high seas including to foreign Sailors for saving or rescuing French citizens at sea, at great risk of her or his life.
Exquisite superior old quality, made by the old French craftsmen of the day, in extra fine solid SILVER with stunning enamel work. This rare French medal is in an extremely fine condition .
Sixteen-point star representing the points of the compass, the main eight points in white enamel, the other eight points shorter and in silver, decorated with curving lines, on laterally pierced ball suspension; the face with a circular central gilt medallion bearing a full-face female head representative of the French Republic within a circular blue enamel ring inscribed ‘REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE’ imposed on a naval anchor; the reverse with a circular central gilt medallion inscribed ‘MÉRITE MARITIME’ (Maritime Merit) within a circular blue enamel ring inscribed ‘MARINE MARCHANDE’ (Merchant Marine); on original ribbon.
