*** Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll Illustrated by Gwynedd Hudson published by Hodder & Stoughton, London 1922 UNDATED FIRST EDITION ****** First edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, superbly illustrated with 12 tipped in plates plus numerous illustrations and decorations in black and orange by Gwynedd Hudson, published by Hodder and Stoughton, London in 1922. Note:- this is the very scarce first Hudson edition, identified by the misspelling of "Caroll" on the title page. This should not be confused with the far more common Boots the Chemist edition or the later reprinted Centenary edition. This is by far a scarcer volume. Along with her interpretation of Peter Pan and Wendy this is some of Gwynedd Hudson's finest work and arguably one of the finest interpretations of this classic allegorical fantasy. Hudson takes a refreshing, if colourful, view of Carroll's world and has produced some memorable and entertaining illustrations which, particularly in the black and orange drawings, have a distinctly Art Deco flavour. Hardback, deep red cloth titled and decorated in black and gilt to front board and spine. Twelve colour plates, plus many illustrations and decorations in black and orange. 180 pages, approx. size 10.25 inches x 8.25 inches (26.5cm x 21cm). Boards in good condition with wear to spine edges and ends and to board tips. Gilt lettering bright to front board, design a little rubbed. Spine lightly sunned. Pictorial end papers intact and in good condition and the binding is sound. A charming inscription to a prelim. The reverse of this page and facing page have a narrow strip of brown sellotape residue at leading edge, probably from securing pages together to conceal the inscription. All pages are present, intact and in good condition and are generally clean with just an odd fingermark. All colour plates and tissue guards are present, intact and in very good condition. An opportunity to acquire a very scarce first edition of Alice in Wonderland, featuring the enchanting illustrations of Gwynedd Hudson. Being in the U.K. this will obviously cover no where near the actual cost so if selected I will honour it so as to abide by ebay policy but your purchase would be sent by surface mail. This option should only be selected if you do not value your purchase, don't mind it getting damaged or lost and don't mind waiting up to three months to receive your purchase. It is not to be recommended! As always auctions will begin at $9.99 with absolutely NO RESERVE EVER and absolutely NO BUY IT NOW EVER. Any book is only ever worth the amount that two competing buyers are willing to bid. Please note that my items are located in the U.K. Shipping costs are based on the predicted packaged weight and prices are calculated using the price finder on the www.royalmail.co.uk . A nominal amount of £0.50 / $0.90 is added to contribute towards the cost of packaging and materials. Insurance For high value items posted to destinations outside of the U.K. I do strongly recommend that you consider using Royal Mail International Signed for service at a cost of $6.00-$10.00 U.S., according to value to be insured. This will provide insurance for your purchase up to a maximum level of £500 and requires a signature on receipt. Unfortunately if insurance is not purchased then a refund can not be issued for items lost or damaged in transit. It is the buyers responsibility to ensure that their purchase is adequately insured. Payment Please Note:- I am able to accept cheques in $USD. Paypal is the easiest method of payment for both buyer and seller but I am also perfectly happy to accept international bank transfers by IBAN and BIC/SWIFT and cheques in GBP or USD. Please don't hesitate to enquire if there is another payment method you would like to use, I will accomodate if at all possible. I will always issue an invoice after the close of an auction. Invoices are issued in U.S.$ but if you need the total in £ sterling, for instance if payment is to be sent by cheque, then the amount payable is the determined by the ebay currency conversion rate at the close of auction on ebay U.K.. No other currency converter is permissable. Postage costs are kept to a minimum but I am still perfectly happy to discount combined purchases. Please bear in mind though that I can only combine packages up to a weight of 5kg for European and Worldwide shipping and that any packages sent to Canada weighing over 2kg will incur additional costs.
