This superb hand carved sculpture of a Rastaman made of gorgeous Soapstone was carved by artists of the Shona tribe, living in the Mutoko hills near Harare in Zimbabwe. Hand polished to perfection, to reveal the stones’ deep color, which is prized by collectors. Soapstone is so called for its soft and soapy charecteristics. Artists' gently strike their chisels with a wooden malett to fashion the raw stone into a masterpiece of beauty. It has a very smooth, soft exterior, yet the warmth and beauty of this natural African Stone is unsurpassed.

This piece will be at home in any decor style, and will compliment any living space. It would go well in a professional office or even in an entry room, and is likely to promote a loving atmosphere and much discussion.

Contemporary Shona art is world renouned, since the artform reached the West in the Early 70's.Shona folk have been carving such masterpieces for hundreds of years, but went undiscovered for most of this time.Mashonaland, a region of North Eastern Zimbabwe is the homeland of the Shona people.Living among the rocky outcrops of places like Mutoko Hills close to Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, Shona artists began creating stone sculptures with contemporary designs, despite sometimes never coming in touch with western cultures. It is an amazing fact that so many artists in this region have never laid eyes upon a sculpture from any of the great masters, and yet their style and carvings bear so much resemblance to these contemporary artists.

When you buy a Shona sculpture from Tagsafari, be proud that you are supporting native people of Africa, who are working hard to preserve their tradition and lifestyle, using their natural resources and skills handed down from generation to generation.

We are proud to be "Helping Africa through Trade and Not Aid"

Buy with confidence, as we import only the finest pieces hand selected by our buyers who have worked with these artists for over 40 years.

This piece will add love and a touch of Africa to any home.
