THE COVER: When Aesop told the
fable of the hare and the tortoise, did
he foresee the twentieth-century traffic
jam? Not likely. The ill-mannered hare,
having taunted the tortoise, deserved
to come in last, but the harried, hurried
sprinter whom artist Dick Sargent so
poignantly portrays did no bragging to
the gentle lady and her dog. Still, the
point of Aesop's story is just as true as
ever: "Slow but sure is the quickest
way in the long run." Or, as our trapped
traveler might put it: "The long run
on foot beats the non~run on wheels."
ARTICLES:
IN COLOR: THE STRANGE AFFAIR OF THE VASA by Don
Schanche. In one of history's most perilous salvage
operations, the treasure-laden hulk of a proud warship is raised
from its somber grave after 300 years.
