Sy Montgomery's last arduous quest for an elusive, myth-cloaked animal took her to the Amazon in Journey of the Pink Dolphins (2000). Here she teams up with evolutionary biologist Gary Galbreath to look for the mysterious golden moon bear, which just might be a species or subspecies unknown to science. Only 8 bear species are known to science: the American black bear; the grizzly; the polar bear; the South American spectacled bear; Asia's sun bear, moon bear, and sloth bear; and the Chinese panda. The moon bears' lineage (most similar to that of the American black bear) as black-coated mountain dwellers had never been challenged - until, on the edge of the new millennium, Montgomery and her scientific colleagues turned up this new golden form.
Intrepid Montgomery and Galbreath travel to perilous Southeast Asia on a chase that involves more captured than wild animals, the nerve-racking collection of bear hairs for DNA analysis, and a soul-wrenching immersion in the harsh reality of the illegal wildlife trade (second only to drugs in scope and violence) and the tragic lives of endangered hill tribes. Their suspenseful search takes them to corrupt Thailand, chaotic Laos, and bloodied Cambodia, land of at least 4 million land mines, vast mountain forests, sun and moon bears, and people who kill them for their medicinally useful body parts. What Montgomery witnesses in terms of animal and human suffering gives her nightmares and will make her readers shudder, but her riveting chronicle is not without hope, rich as it is in adventure, discovery, profiles of heroic wildlife specialists, bear lore sacred and scientific, humor, and a subtle but pervasive spirituality.
