Seth Thomas “SONORA” 4-Bell Chime Adamantine V Top

Sonora Clock Co. existed back in the late 1800’s. William Hoschke of New York, design his own Sonora configuration & applied for a patent April 16, 1907 ~ granted on April 18, 1908. Seth Thomas purchased the rights to Hoschke's bell chime mechanism and resonators patent around 1912, changed the movements to suit their own manufacturing techniques, cut the price substantially, and successfully marketed a full line of “Sonora” clocks with numerous models and configurations. The unique, rich, resonant sound of Sonora bell chimes comes from the wooden expansive sound chamber in which the cup bells are mounted. They are struck with leather-tipped hammers. These movements were made with as many as eight bells playing two different tunes, some even alternating between tunes each hour!

The movement closest to the dial inside runs the Time & Strike, the 2nd movement further back in the case runs the WESTMINSTER chimes. The Westminster chime winding area is to the right of the number 3. The key has to reach back past the 1st movement and wind the 2nd movement, thus the winding arbor cannot be over the 6 like normal but instead over by the 3 on the dial. They are known to be the most MAJESTIC SOUNDING MANTEL CLOCKS as the sound is played on bells and not on rods. They tend to have silencer levers, some have the famous SETH THOMAS PATENTED ADAMANTINE FINISH which is a coating over wood and was used on the models dating about 1901-1920 or so. These clocks are the FASTEST APPRECIATING CLOCKS ON THE MARKET TODAY!

For a clock of this age, C1908, this is in Exceptional Condition! Stand on brass feet.

The case has an Adamantine finish ~ Very Clean ~ no chips or scraps or staining.

The dial is nickel ~ showing some aging. The bezel around it is brass.

The clock is Running, but could use a cleaning.

Both chimes are operating correctly. Sound is beautiful!

Comes with its key & pendulum, original as I can determine.

There is no back cover, but one should be available or made at a good clock repair store.

Measures, 14" tall by 12" wide by 7.5" deep.

Weight of Clock with key & pendulum, 12.8 lbs. Boxed, roughly 16 lbs.

Just a year ago, this particular design of Seth Thomas clock with "Sonora Chime" 4-bell was selling in similar condition, cleaned, for roughly $3000. plus dollars. My Reserve is CONSIDERABLY LOWER!
