CONTEMPORARY RECORDS PRESENTS HOWARD RUMSEY'S LIGHTHOUSE ALL-STARS, Extended Play 45 RPM printed on red vinyl, signed by Shelly Manne, Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Giuffre.
A great jazz find, here is the rare red vinyl pressing of Contempoarary Records Presents Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars 45 RPM extended play record, signed by Shelly Manne, Shorty Rogers and Jimmy Giuffre.
The item is in very good to excellent condition. Although this is a 7 inch EP, the jacket is cardboard like an LP jacket, not paper. The spine is still strong, but the top and bottom seams are beginning to wear through and to split. The face of the front and back covers both look great, with no marks other than the autographs. The record is in good condition with light wear and a few light scratches visible.
From the All Music Guide:
Shelly Manne
Shelly Manne made a countless number of records from the 1940s into the 1980s but is best-known as a good-humored bandleader who never hogged the spotlight. Originally a saxophonist, Manne switched to drums when he was 18 and started working almost immediately. He was with Joe Marsala's band (making his recording debut in 1941), played briefly in the big bands of Will Bradley, Raymond Scott and Les Brown and was on drums for Coleman Hawkins's classic "The Man I Love" session of late 1943. Manne worked on and off with Stan Kenton during 1946-52, also touring with Jazz at the Philharmonic (1948-49) and gigging with Woody Herman (1949). After leaving Kenton, Manne moved to Los Angeles where he became the most in-demand of all jazz drummers. He began recording as a leader (his first session was cut in Chicago in 1951) on a regular basis starting in 1953 when he first put together the quintet Shelly Manne and His Men.
Shorty Rogers
A fine middle-register trumpeter whose style seemed to practically define "cool jazz," Shorty Rogers was actually more significant for his arranging, both in jazz and in the movie studios. After gaining early experience with Will Bradley and Red Norvo and serving in the military, Rogers rose to fame as a member of Woody Herman's First and Second Herds (1945-1946 and 1947-1949), and somehow he managed to bring some swing to the Stan Kenton Innovations Orchestra (1950-1951), clearly enjoying writing for the stratospheric flights of Maynard Ferguson.
Jimmy Giuffre
Jimmy Giuffre has had many accomplishments in a long career that has never been predictable. Giuffre graduated from North Texas State Teachers College (1942), played in an Army band during his period in the service and then had stints with the orchestras of Boyd Raeburn, Jimmy Dorsey and Buddy Rich. His composition "Four Brothers" became a hit for Woody Herman, an orchestra that Giuffre eventually joined in 1949. Settling on the West Coast, the cool-toned tenor started also playing clarinet and occasional baritone. He was with Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse All-Stars (1951-52) and Shorty Rogers' Giants (1952-56), recording with many top West Coast jazz players.
