Xiangqi - Shogi - Shatranj - Janggi - Makruk - Shatar - Dou Shou Qi - Luzhanqi
- Chinese Checkers - Go

A handsomely crafted edition of Shogi, the traditional chess of Japan. It is beautifully made, yet compact enough for convenient travel and storage.

The Game of Shogi

Shogi translates to "the generals' game." It is the chess form native to Japan, virtually unchanged for the past 500 years. It seems to be derived primarily from the Chinese chess, xiangqi, but also bears interesting similarities to Thai chess, makruk, and apparently borrows bishop and rook moves from the European chess.
But the distinctively Japanese shogi has novel rules unknown to other forms of chess. Most markedly, when a shogi piece is captured, it remains in play, waiting on the sideline until the captor chooses to place it back on the board, as one of his own pieces. Also, unique to shogi is that almost all of the pieces promote to a pieces of greater power when they reach to opponent's side of the board. The tile-like pieces flip over to show their new values.
The game takes on fascinating complexities and surprises not found in any other board game. It is still played avidly in Japan and recently has been gaining popularity in other parts of the world.

Board and Pieces

The board is 10 1/4 by 9 1/2 inches. It is of solid wood, 3/8 inch thick (not framed veneer like some inexpensive sets), and hinges in the center.

The pieces are also carved in wood, with their Japanese characters burned in on both sides. The largest piece, the "king" (o-sho, or Jade General) is just one inch long.
Unlike some modern sets which show the flip-side promotional value in red, these pieces maintain the tradition of one color; the promotional values are indicated by the "cursive" style of caligraphy. (See the illustration below, showing each piece, standing in front of its promoted value.)

English Rules

Included with this set are the official rules of shogi, in English. They are clearly and concisely given, with diagrams and explanations in a convenient four panel booklet.
