Offered without reserve is this outstanding fragment of early Florida sporting history. Purchased out of an estate in northern Wisconsin is this 5 1/4" long X 2" wide pink silk lapel ribbon on which is printed in black ink "DELEGATE - Third Annual State Shuffleboard Tourney and Meeting - Florida Shuffleboard Association - West Palm Beach - February 18, 19, 20, 1931".
In our travels we have seen a few celluloid pinback buttons for various Florida Shuffleboard Clubs (i.e Orlando, St. Petersburg, etc.) but this is the first actual tournament item that we have encountered. This piece indicates that the first Florida State Tournament had occurred just two years before in 1929. This very rare item was issued in the depths of the Great Depression following the crash of the Florida land boom. A few miles to the south at Key Biscayne Al Capone was enjoying his last days of freedom before he was convicted of tax evasion that October and sentenced to 11 years in Federal prison.
The condition is time capsule gem mint excepting a tiny and almost unnoticeable pinhole between the letters T and H in "Third". Aside from that virtually invisible flaw this piece seems to have escaped the aging process as it was hidden at the bottom of a shoe box. No staining, foxing, fading, or separation tears.
One of the nicest Florida wearable Florida items that we have had the privilege to offer. Good luck and thanks for looking.
