Newpaper columnist Irene Kelly receives a letter from someone calling himself "Thanatos" predicting that Clio (the muse of history) will be the first to die. Irene takes the letter as a prank until a local history professor is brutally killed. When more letters and deaths follow Irene realizes that a killer with a classical bent is luring her into a labyrinth of terror and that she must untangle the roots of this maniac's rage or she will die like the others.
