ITEM SPECIFICS: 1st edition/1st printing, Knopf, 1931. Signed and inscribed by the author to a family friend, A. Smiley Dodd, where the author speaks of the friend's kindness to his wife and a contemplated trip to visit them. Drawings in the book are by Erick Berry.
It is "an Indian hero story of Tchamsem the Raven, the leader and savior of his tribe of Indians in the Canadian Northwest" and "is based on the myths of the Indian tribes of British Columbia and Prince Charlotte Island", and "is the first time the material has been written in a form to appeal to boys and girls" (from the DJ) .
The book is bound in blue cloth with yellow decorations and printing. It has some light edgewear to the binding and a small stain on the outer page edges. It is straight, clean & very tight, with no handwriting other than the author's in it. The dustjacket has small edge chips and tears, with larger chips across the spine ends, is price clipped, has rubbing at the folds, and has some tape reinforcements at spine ends and flap fold ends, plus a small blank white label on the lower spine. The striking illustration on the front panel is bright and clean, and it all looks much better than it sounds. Very scarce.
