DESCRIPTION:
The crushing 2006 debut from Sistrenatus , Division One unveils the new death industrial behemoth of Canadian dark industrial artist Harlow MacFarlane; before Sistrenatus, MacFarlane had worked his drone sorcery within the obscure black ambient project Funerary Call. Sistrenatus is a much heavier beast than his previous band, though, which anyone who has heard Funerary Call will realize within the first several minutes of Division One, as MacFarlane expertly combines crushing Cold Meat-inspired death industrial, frostbitten black ambient electronics, and blasts of vicious noise together into an intense and oppressive experience that paints a grim, dread-filled landscape of urban decay, crumbling factories, rusted machinery, and crypt-like sewers winding underneath the streets of a dying city. One of the things that makes this album such a creepout is the way that MacFarlane uses found sounds and field recordings and layers these organic bits of sound with the icy electronic textures, martial drumbeats, orchestral synths and grinding rhythmic loops to create his dank atmospheres. These sounds include heavy steel doors slamming shut and slabs of metal thudding to the floor, murky, barely discernable conversations and muttering voices, heavy chains being dragged over concrete floors and intercepted radio frequencies, of lone footsteps echoing down endless underground passageways, all sewn in to the grinding industrial death dirges and building on Sistrenatus' already hellish atmosphere. The music moves between ultraheavy machine rhythms and abstract ambience, sometimes even drifting into Carpenter-ian soiundtrack synth-pulse, and it achieves a truly evil cinematic quality that should really be experienced with a good set of earphones so that you can fully immerse in this malevolent soundworld. Def check this out if yer into the demonic industrial/ambient of bands like early Der Blutharsch, Archon Satani, MZ.412, and Lull.
