DESCRIPTION
SMILES, Samuel Character.

Published London: John Murray, 1885

New Edition, 8vo. Finely bound in contemporary tree calf with roll-tooled gilt border, spine in compartments with gilt decorations, raised bands, morocco label, marbled edges and endpapers, lengthy (full-page) prize inscription dated 1887 to preliminary blank.

The second of Smiles' five works on self-improvement which marked the beginning of a new genre in literature called 'Self-Help' after his best known book. All of these works, which achieved exceptional popularity and were translated into many languages, embodied the Victorian values of self-reliance, moral rectitude, and abhorrence of debt.

CONDITION
Endleaves spotted but main text clean throughout, covers with trivial wear only, boards firmly attached with no cracking to joints, handsome book.
