Souvenir map of "The Port of Salem Mafsachuetts". Very colorful. "Here are Salem's ancient streets. Upon them there may well have walked gentlemen who had seen Will Shakespear in "Hamlet at the "Globe," before the ink upon his manuscripts was dry. The halfway mark of Salem's history, in this year of grace 1930, falls a bare three years later than the Declaration of Independence. Salem lived longer as a colonial cityof the Kings of England than she has lived since under all the Presidents of these United States. She has made important contributions to her country. She still had time, in a story strictly of her own, to weave beautiful and brilliant chapters of gallantries, of adventures and of wealth. She won her own place in the ports of the world. Her captains habitually circumnavigated the globe. These Salem streets are deep with history as they seemed, to musing Hawthorne, deep with decay, moving him with "the mere sensuous sympathy of dust for dust." Her proud and graceful life speaks of these streets in this architecture. The author portrays them as best he may, craving your pardon for all errors and omissions, and for the brief inadequacy of his note." It has a copyright of 1930, Warren H. Butler, Salem, Mass. The map measures 32 x 25. It comes with it's original envelope. High bidder pays $2.50 for postage, international postage will be higher. The date that appears in the picture is the date I took the picture, it is from the camera and is not printed on the map. |
