SPENCER BROWNING & RUST astronomical / navigational telescope. Circa 1784-1840.......This large precision single draw telescope was made in London, England over 160 years ago. Spencer Browning and Rust business 1784 - 1840, made high quality naval devices. This Night and Day scope has a major optical problem, the primary or objective lens is fractured. The telescope still functions as designed, but in its present condition as a DAY scope. The front lens collects light, the lens then focuses the light to the second lens. Even though the lens is fractured the COLLECTED FOCUSED light passing through the objective is reaching the second lens, the result a magnified image. The fracture does have an effect on the seen image. The fracture scatters the incoming light and also blocks some of the light, the scattered light does not hit the second lens at the focal point and the blocked light has little effect on the image. The overall effect of the fractured lens is that the scope functions as if it had a smaller diameter front lens than it actually has. I have no knowledge how or when this fracture occurred. The fractured lens seems to be intact, there are no sounds of broken glass in the telescope tube.

The good news; This naval telescope is in excellent shape. If the lens is changed with another telescope lens, it would be just about perfect. Diameter 2.5 inches, Front lens 1.5 inches length at full extension 39-40 inches. Includes lens slide covers, lens cover and sun shade...... And yes I do think it is worth what I am asking and more.
