Which Paint Should I Use?
Selection of the correct coating for your pool depends upon (A) the type of pool interior material if it is unpainted (concrete, plaster, fiberglass, etc.) OR (B) the type of paint that is already on the pool surface.
UNPAINTED POOLS
New Concrete You have several choices of paint for a new concrete pool: Water Base Acrylic -- AVAILABLE BY SPECIAL ORDER ONLY (1-2 Years Life) Synthetic Rubber -- ENVIROLON (2-3 Years Life) Epoxy -- SUUPER POXY PAINT or POXY PAINT(5-8 Years Life)
Each has its own use and application advantage, although epoxy will give the longest life.
When using epoxy, the pool may be coated as soon as the new concrete sets. When using synthetic rubber, the concrete should cure 30 days before painting.
Bare Plaster We recommend using epoxy on bare plaster for best results. Use one primer coat of GUNITE PRIMER if the plaster is unusually rough, or one coat of EPOXY PRIMER if the plaster is relatively smooth. Finish with POXY PAINT (2 coats) or SUPER POXY PAINT (1 coat).
Fiberglass Epoxy coatings are the only pool paints chemically compatible with fiberglass. The fiberglass should first be painted with 1 coat of GUNITE PRIMER, then 2 coats of POXY PAINT or 1 coat of SUPER POXY PAINT is recommended.
Sandblasted or Old Unpainted Concrete Sandblasted or clean, unpainted concrete will accept all types of pool paint. We recommend epoxy coatings because they are more durable, attractive, easy to clean and the pool may be filled more quickly after painting. Use 1 coat of EPOXY PRIMER or GUNITE PRIMER and 1 coat of SUPER POXY PAINT.
EPOXY COATINGS Epoxy pool coatings have proven to be the best long-range protection for swimming pool surfaces. This is due to the fact that epoxies cure to a very hard, non-porous finish that is insensitive to pool chemicals, pH balance and automatic pool cleaning machines. Their ceramic-like qualities create an appearance that will be easy to clean and extremely durable.
We produce 2 types of epoxy pool coatings. The following descriptions will help you decide which system is right for you.
Poxy Paint and Super Poxy Paint Systems Poxy Paint and Super Poxy Paint are high gloss epoxy pool coatings that are easy to apply and should yield 5 to 8 years of service. These finishes are very easy to clean. You may use POXY PAINT or SUPER POXY PAINT on most conventional pool surfaces with excellent results.
Unpainted pool surfaces will require a coat of primer to insure a good adhesion. The correct primer for your pool is listed in the quick reference chart below. One coat of SUPER POXY PAINT or two coats of POXY PAINT should be applied over the primer.
Coverage SUPER POXY PAINT = 150 sq. ft. per gallon POXY PAINT = 275 sq. ft. per gallon
Application SUPER POXY PAINT = brush, roller or airless spray equipment POXY PAINT = brush or roller
RUBBER BASE FINISHES Rubber base paints are one of the most popular types of coatings used for repainting swimming pools. This is due largely to the fact that most swimming pools were originally painted with chlorinated rubber prior to the development of epoxy coatings.
Today, rubber base coatings still provide an attractive, easy-to-apply finish.
Envirolon Envirolon is an economical synthetic rubber base formula meeting all of the quality performance expectations of chlorinated rubber base paint. Envirolon can be applied to a bare concrete or plaster pool, as well as over old rubber base paint. Envirolon also has excellent chemical resistance and color retention. Two coats of Envirolon are required for best results. On bare surfaces that are unusually porous, a third coat may be necessary. Coverage ENVIROLON = 250 sq. ft. per gallon
Tips For Painting with Envirolon
- Thoroughly remove all loose paint before repainting
- Always follow the 3-step cleaning process outlined on the label. This removes all contaminants, which may impede performance of the coating.
- Try to avoid painting in the direct rays of a hot sun
- Do not paint when the surface temperature is below 50 degrees Fahrenheit
Surface Preparation
Repair all cracks, pits and holes (if necessary) before preparing the surface. For details about pool and deck repair, click on the Pool and Deck Repair link back on the product page.
The most important aspect of pool painting is surface preparation. Paint will not adhere to the slightest oily residue, such as suntan lotion, body oils, hairspray, algae or anything else that comes between the pool surface and the paint. The best method for preparing your pool is described in the following steps.
STEP 1 -- POOL WASHING The best pool washing solution is tri-sodium phosphate mixed with warm water. NEVER use a soap-type detergent. Soap products leave a film on the surface which will result in poor paint adhesion.
How to wash your pool Mix 8 ounces of tri-sodium phosphate to each gallon of warm water. One gallon of this solution will wash approximately 200 square feet.
Scrub the surface vigorously with this solution. Rinse off the residue with clear water immediately after scrubbing. Be careful not to allow the pool washing solution to dry on the surface -- work in small areas.
Always scrub the pool walls first, then do the floor last.
STEP 2 -- ACID ETCHING Acid etching is required on bare masonry surfaces like concrete or plaster. It is also effective for removing chalky residue and hard mineral deposits on a previously painted pool.
Acid etching opens millions of tiny pores, which allow the subsequent paint coating to penetrate the surface, thus creating a secure cohesive bond.
Even on previously painted pools, we strongly recommend an acid etching.
NOTE: To prevent eye injury, NEVER pour water into acid. Always pour acid into water and wear protective eyewear.
Making the Acid Mix in a plastic bucket a 10 percent solution of muriatic acid in water. (do not mix solution in a galvanized container) Most muriatic acid is packaged at 20% or 30% strength. One gallon of 30% muriatic acid mixed with 2 gallons of water will yield three gallons of 10%solution. Likewise, one gallon of 20% muriatic acid mixed with one gallon of water will provide two gallons of 10% solution.
One gallon of 10% solution is sufficient for etching 100 square feet of pool surface.
The Etching Procedure Liberally brush the acid solution on the surface. The acid will bubble on the surface when applied. As soon as this effervescence ceases, rinse the solution off with clean water. The surface should feel like fine sandpaper when properly etched. Splash a small amount of water on the surface to see if it is sufficiently etched. If the water soaks in fairly quickly, the surface is properly etched. If the water stands on the surface, another etching will be required or switch to a stronger acid solution before continuing with the rest of the pool.
STEP 3 -- WASH THE SURFACE AGAIN We highly recommend repeating STEP 1: Wash the surface again with the tri-sodium phosphate solution to neutralize any remaining acid on the surface.
FIBERGLASS POOLS Do not acid etch fiberglass pools! To prepare a fiberglass pool for painting, sand the surface in straight lines using coarse sandpaper. This sanding will create a mechanical bond for the epoxy paint. Do not use an orbital sander.
Once the fiberglass has been properly sanded, perform the pool washing procedure described above. Allow the surface to dry and you are ready to paint.
