[PLOT SUMMARY]
DESCRIPTION:
This is one of the most freaked out, ferocious discs we've ever heard, a hateful, misanthropic blast of blackened industrial doom noise, a sonic tapestry of total hell on earth. The notorious Project Nihil and Projekt Terrror albums from Dutch nihilists Stalaggh were originally released on New Era Productions and Total Holocaust Records in limited editions, each one a half-hour track created from recordings of the screams of actual mental patients backed by an ultra abrasive swirl of improvised black/noise/industrial/doom, which for this U.S. re-issue has been remixed by Xardas of industrial-doom designers 20.SV (whose excellent Acid Vomit Human Genocide CD was listed in our last catalog update). The addition of Xardas' extreme electronic noise textures makes Nihilistik Terrror an immensely suffocating and distressing sonic event: deep within the swirling chaos of hateful blacknoise and those horrific, anguished screams and moans, you can almost detect snatches of damaged doom metal riffs and beyond-distorted blastbeats and minimalist percusssion drowning in the crashing, buzzing maelstrom of grinding distorted drones, molten guitar noise, sparkling electronic hiss, shrieking feedback, and stygian tone waves. Stalaggh's formless, hateful scrapescapes make for an extremely challening listen, something like the damaged blackness of Abruptum being dragged through walls of Merzbow strength noise, but if you can handle both their controversial use of genuinely mentally ill people as members, and the confrontationally abstract vibes that seep with an utter contempt for humanity, there is a deep void of black sound to immerse yourself in with these two 30-minute constructions. This US re-issue also features a previously unreleased five minute track at the end, which has more wailing voices of the damned layered over a particularly damaged and stumbling free-doom-noise jam. CANDLELIGHT (2009) NEW / UNPLAYED

DESCRIPTION:
There have been plenty of grindcore bands that started out playing regular Earache-worshipping blastcore and then mutated over the course of their career into something quite different, like C.S.S.O. and their evolution from low-rent Carcass worship to the crazed Hendrix-meets-Napalm Death psychedelic grindrock of their later releases, or how Carcass themselves become more of a melodic mix of hard rock and death metal on their last album Swansong. But I don't think any grindcore band ever ended up as far from where they started musically as Xysma. This Finnish band formed back in 1998 and were one of the first grindcore bands from Finland, releasing a demo called Swarming of the Maggots that showcased their crude Carcass-inspired blastage. As the band progressed, their sound began to incorporate more and more elements of rock, with groovy riffs and shorter, catchy songs, and by the time they released their 1996 album Lotto on Relapse Records, there was not an ounce of death metal or grind to found. When Lotto came out, it seemed totally incongruent that it would have come out on Relapse, a ten song set of heavy alternative rock that sounded like a crunchier Gumball mixed up with Hawkwind-style cosmic effects, psychedelic fuzz-box lead guitar, shades of noise rock, a couple of laid back psych-pop songs, even bits of funk and the occasionaly Sabbathy riff. Parts of the album kinda of remind me of a way poppier monster Magnet, and Lotto had heavier elements compared to what similiar bands like Gumball, Urge Overkill and Dinosaur Jr were doing at the time. But just about everyone who was a fan of Xysma's earlier metallic albums were turned off by this complete change in sound, which was hardly a surprise.
They followed that up with 1998's Girl On The Beach, which continued the band's melding of psychedelic pop, Beatles-esque melodies, distorted rock riffs and trippy effects, and which again fell on deaf ears for the most part. The thing is, if this album (and Lotto) had been promoted to the alt rock crowd (and, uh, had been released about four or five years earlier) and weren't saddled with a weird name like Xysma (which, one must remember, was still the medical term for "membranous shreds in the faeces" even when the band is playing pure fuzzed-out pop), this band would have been fucking huge, because these songs are ridiculously catchy, with both albums having at least a handful of songs that I can easily imagine having been huge hits on college/alt radio in the early 90's. Imagine a stoned, super-catchy combination of Gumball and Sabbath, Queens Of The Stone Age and Therapy? Hawkwind, with loads of spacey, trippy synthesizers and lush pop melodies and crunchy distorted riffs, and just about every song managing to be a perfect chunk of hummable fuzzpop. Certainly as far from their goregrind roots as they could possibly get!
After the release of Girl, Xysma threw in the towel and broke up, and outside of Finland they pretty much faded into obscurity. But both Lotto and Girl On The Beach were remastered and re-released as a double disc set by Candlelight in 2005, again to almost no fanfare, and we've been able to grab some copies of this double album super cheap. © CRUCIAL BLAST
