THE HISTORY BEHIND THE STANGL POTTERY COMPANY:

Samuel Hill began Hill Pottery in 1814 in Flemington, New Jersey. Hill was a utilitarian pottery: producing earthenware drain pipes, storage crocks and jars from Flemington's red clay. By the 1860's, the company had been acquired by Abram Fulper. The Fulper Pottery Company continued in the utilitarian pottery business, but produced primarily stoneware rather than earthenware.

By 1900, the company was under the direction of William H. Fulper II, grandson of Abram Fulper. William was responsible for the development and introduction of Fulper's now renowned Vasekraft art pottery in 1909. Wanting to shift completely from utilitarian goods, in 1910 he hired ceramic engineer Martin Stangl to develop new shapes and glazes for the company's art pottery products. Incidentally, this was a task Martin Stangl also helped Haeger Pottery undertake during the few years he left Fulper Pottery. The direction he assisted Haeger Pottery take helped make them the most productive art pottery company in America to date.

After returning to Fulper Pottery, Martin Stangl was made Vice-President by 1924, and became President of the Company by 1926. One of Martin Stangl's first key accomplishments was the introduction of America's first open stock solid-color dinnerware: Fulper Fayence.

William Fulper suffered a fatal heart attack in October of 1928. Shortly after, in the spring of 1929, Martin Stangl consolidated the Fulper Fayence, Fulper-Stangl, and the Stangl Ware brands into a single line called Stangl Pottery.

By the 1940s, hand-painted dinnerware had become popular, augmented in 1942 with the introduction of Stangl's best-known product: hand-carved, hand-painted dinnerware. Shortly after, Stangl's dinnerware and artware was sold in over 3000 department, gift and jewelry stores across America.

Stangl's Flemington Outlet showroom, one of the nation's first retail outlets, was a keenly popular tourist destination. Folks traveled from far and wide to partake of the bargains in high-quality pottery offered and to enjoy the infamous pottery demonstrations given there. For decades skilled artisans such as John Kunsman, James Teague, Kay Hackett and Rose Herbeck would hand-throw pottery pieces and demonstrate hand-carving and hand-painting techniques right in front of the visiting customers.

Because Flemington was on the direct route from Manhattan, New York, to the celebrity weekend spot of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the Outlet was often visited by many notable personalities--a bonus draw for the touring and shopping public. During busy week-ends, there were often as many as 3000 customers visiting Stangl's Flemington showroom per day.

Martin Stangl suffered a heart attack in 1971, and passed away on February 13th, 1972. By November 1978, Stangl Pottery ceased manufacturing and closed forever, signaling the end of a truly unique American folk-art product.

Due to the very nature of hand-crafted products, each may contain slight variations in the material or the finish--these are not defects. If there is any defect such as a chip, crack, or repair, we will say so in the listing. Excessive utensil marks will be noted, as they depict heavy use. Slight shelf wear, crazing, or an occassional slight mark from stacking is completely acceptable for vintage items many decades old, and will not be noted.
