This is an original STEREOVIEW PHOTOGRAPH titled "Tip Top House, Mt. Washington, N.H." This sepia toned stereoview shows a group of five WELL-DRESSED VICTORIAN TOURISTS, two women and three men, at the top of Mt. Washington near a sign for TIP TOP HOUSE. With help of magnification, the man standing to the left of the Tip Top House sign appears to be an African-American. The BEARDED GENTLEMAN standing on the right is wearing a STOVE PIPE HAT. The two women are wearing PERIOD 1860s CLOTHING, which must have been quite cumbersome for climbing over these big boulders. This sepia toned stereoview is in good condition with some fading, soiling and spotting. The card is marked on the back "BIERSTADT BROTHERS, Photographers, China Hall, 39 Purchase Street, NEW BEDFORD, MASS. Views among the White Mountains; The Far West; Among the Camps on the Potomac etc., etc." (NOTE: There was an Edward Bierstadt (1824-1906), who was a German-born American portrait and landscape photographer, and engraver. He was the brother of Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902), the German-born American landscape painter. The Bierstadt family moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1833.) Made circa 1870.
